Laws have recently been passed that mandate a minimum amount of recycled content.

Several large companies, such as Coca Cola, Pepsi, Nestle, have committed for the next 10 years that their packaging will consist of a greater percentage of recycled plastic material.

These events affect the demand for recycled plastic.

Based on the measurements of the report Closed Loop Partners Accelerating Circular Supply Chain for Plastics, carried out in 2019, the results show that only 6% of the demand of recycled plastic can be met.

The FDA (Food & Drugs Administration) considers three forms of recycling process, primary, secondary, and tertiary.

The primary type of recycling involves the reuse of waste before consumption and during the manufacture of articles that will come into contact with food.

The secondary type of recycling usually involves the physical recycling of plastic packaging materials through grinding, melting, reforming processes, which are the washing of the materials and then the treatment of high processing temperatures to avoid impurities.

The tertiary type of recycling is the regeneration of purified raw materials by chemical treatment or by depolymerization of the packaging material.
